To acquire a basic and synthetic general knowledge about canon law in the life and the mission of the Church, its origin, development and the essence of basic norms established in book I of the CIC/83.


1. General Introduction. 2. Categories of law. 3. Origin and development of canon law. 4. The scope of canon law in the Church. 5. General outline of CIC/83 and CCEO/90. 6. Book I of CIC/83: preliminary norms; ecclesiastical laws and customs; Persons in the Church; Governance in the Church and Ecclesiastical offices; Ecclesiastical decrees; Ecclesiastical juridical acts; Statutes and Ordinances; Counting of Time. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this course, students will have acquired: basic knowledge of the historical origin and development of canon law; interdisciplinary nature and essence of canon law; and synthetic meaning of laws established in book I of CIC/83. The acquisition of the general knowledge will help the students to: interpret basic ecclesiastical laws and be enabled to apply them in day-to-day cases involving the ministry and life of the Christian Faithful. This objective will be fulfilled by the following learning activities: attendance and active participation in the class; personal reading especially of the indicated bibliography; and related class activities.
